This choo choo train:
And this Ford Ranger
They have, or could have, this in common:
It’s a 3.2l Ford diesel five. Available as an option on the Ranger which more commonly gets, at least where I am, a 2.2 four which is to be replac ed by a new 2.0.
The train however
has four of them, a pair under each car. Why so many? B
ecause in an unusual and seemingly contrarian move, what was previously an EV is being converted to diesel, a change which would probably induce paroxysms in believers
in dieselgate. There isn’t space for one large engine so two smaller ones are stuck
in instead.

Huh, I thought Vivarail’s whole thing was that it was making battery powered trains. To think we' re so lacking in DMUs that we’re having to convert old tube rolling stock.

DMUs, a thing that I still haven't ridden on.

The original business plane was produce DMUs
to replace Pacers. That didn’t work out because the intended customer went for new build instead. They instead
got two small
orders which haven’t been put in service yet for reasons unrevealed although mileage acc
umulation is ongoing.
. They then needed to come up with something else so they built an experimental BEMU. They’re
also talk
ing about a fuel cell model (
an FCMU?).

Never? D
epends where you are I suppose but the vast majority of the trains I’ve been on have been EMUs or DMUs. Loco hauled is something of a rarity except for long distance.

I’ve never actually been on a DMU, true statement! If it was diesel, it was loco. I did just learn that a new branch line to our local metro (which I never use) uses light rail 2-car DMUs.

If you’re on a commuter type one, they’re not necessarily the most refined of trains, especially if you’re over an engine as there’s then something of the feeling of being in a bus.

I’m actually a bit of a closet train fan. Being from Hong Kong does that to people
